Competitors will go head to head to bring Southern Missouri the BEST Taco. Think you have the ingredients to win Maximo Champion and take home the Prize Money? If you do, and you want to expose your restaurant or food truck to a thousand Taco-Loving fans, then enter the competition.

Do you have what it takes? Let’s TACO ‘bout it! Everyone has been waiting for the renewal of last year’s hottest event, so here it is… Taco de SOMO 2020. The premiere taco competition of Southwest Missouri is back. On May 16 we expect 1,000 taco connoisseurs from all over Southern Missouri to descend on Springfield and experience the best tacos SOMO has to offer. Restaurants, bars and food trucks will be competing to be the Grande Champion of Taco de SOMO. It will be an evening of entertainment, tacos, Lunazul tequila cocktails and cold cerveza.

Your Cost: NOTHING to compete! Outside of your staffing and food costs --- this event is free of charge to promote your tacos and possibly win some great prizes AND the recognition of best tacos in southwest Missouri. In fact, you will have the opportunity to recover some of your costs (see more below).
What do I get for my entering? 4 cook’s passes, 2 general admission tickets, and a 10 x 10 space.
We Provide: 10 x 10 space and 2 six foot uncovered tables
Marketing: Not only will taco lovers from all over Southwest Missouri be searching to find their favorite tacos, you will also be featured on the Taco de SOMO web site (www.tacodesomo.com) and Taco de SOMO Facebook page. All winners in all categories will remain on the Taco de SOMO webpage for the calendar year 2020. Any digital artwork should be emailed to Development@dcoonline.com
Booth Space: Booths will be assigned on a first registered basis.
Each Restaurant needs to provide: Tacos! Admission will be cut off at 1,000 guests. Please bring enough to last all evening. If you run out of food you cannot take down your booth until 9pm. A sampling should be from 2 - 4oz. in size. Bring anything and everything that you want to make your taco the best taco. People’s Choice votes are based on the samples you provide. We encourage you to bring any sides, sauces, toppings or bottoms that make your taco unique. Each participant must serve tacos held on a back table per the health department. Each participant must maintain proper food temperature using a Sterno or electric heating. Per City of Springfield, each restaurant must have a current Springfield business license. If your business is outside of city limits, a license may be purchased for $5 (please check with City of Springfield).
How do I recover costs? New this year – we are providing only one taco sample with each General Admission ticket. Guests may purchase additional taco tickets for $2 each. Restaurants/vendor will collect those tickets and turn them in to registration/cashier at the end of the event, between 9 and 9:30 p.m. You will be issued a check reflecting $1 per ticket collected on or before May 31, 2020.
What are we competing for?
People’s Choice: the “People’s Choice” will be determined by the number of tokens/coins collected. Each General Admission ticket comes with a “vote” (coin) and you want them to put it in your designated container. Winner determined by votes of the general public attending.
Judges’ Choice in the following categories:
Rogue – may be a combination of proteins above OR vegetarian/vegan OR anything that was not aforementioned.
Judges Máximo Champion: Best overall judges’ scores for all taco categories. You must enter minimum of three categories to be considered as winner. Winner will be determined by a panel of professional judges.
Best Booth: The best designed, decorated, festive booth determined by designated judges.
Plaques will be awarded for each of the above listed categories. Cash prizes for People’s Choice and each Judges’ Choice award. First prize in each of those categories will win $500. Maximo Champion will be featured on an engraved name plate on a custom trophy featuring the winner name and year that will be on display at the site of our 2020 Grande Sponsor, Reliable Chevrolet.
Setup: Setup for restaurants can begin as early as 2 p.m. on May 16. All booths should be ready to serve to the public NO LATER than 5:45 p.m. on Saturday, May 16. Judging will be done prior to the event at 4 p.m. A list of times and categories for judging will be posted in your booth. THIS IS A RAIN OR SHINE EVENT. In the event that weather prevents us from being able to safely operate, the event will be cancelled and no refunds or reimbursements will be given.
IF YOU AGREE TO PARTICIPATE AND ARE A “NO SHOW” OR CANCEL YOUR PARTICIPATION AFTER 5/01/2020, YOUR ESTABLISHMENT WILL BE CHARGED FOR TICKETS RECEIVED, BANNER, AND BOOTH SPACE FOR A TOTAL OF $100.

RELEASE AND INDEMNITY AGREEMENT: In consideration of the granting of the right to participate, entrants, participants and spectators, by execution of this form, release Developmental Center of the Ozarks, and their officers, directors, and any representative or workers, or property owners, or occupiers, or sponsors connected with the presentation of Taco de SOMO of and from any claims, injuries, losses, damages or judgments’ that may be suffered by the entrant, participant, or spectator to his person or property and agree to indemnify the aforesaid parties and loss, liability, expenses, or payment resulting from such injury to person or property.
